From what I have read, he freed his slaves and became an abolitionist.

Irrelevant. Was he held accountable for his crimes? No.

As I just discovered, there’s a section on slavery on the Franklin Wikipedia page that spells out how he went from enslaver to abolitionist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Franklin#Slavery

“He went from…” like he didn't always think it was a bad thing.

He didn’t. He was an enslaver. Later he was an abolitionist. So he was first for enslavement and later against it. But I am not an expert on BF. I was curious about David Mason’s comment and checked Wikipedia to see whether there was anything there about BF and slavery, so I shared what I found.
